Unlock the Benefits of a Sustainable Future

The Green Schools Program is a great way to get your school involved in creating a sustainable future. Our program encourages collaboration between schools and their local communities, allowing for a greater impact on the environment. By working together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future for our students and our planet.

Philadelphia K-12 public, private, parochial, and charter schools are welcome to apply.

    Program Benefits

    Grants

Green Schools Grants provide up to $2,500 in funding per school for projects that create a more sustainable school environment, inside the building and/or outside on the school grounds. We will be providing funds to selected applicants through the 2024-2025 school year.

    Assembly and Classroom Conversations

The Streets Department is available to discuss our role in the City, qualities that lead to leadership positions, and other facets like career and salary opportunities depending upon age group.

Careers in the waste industry are wide ranging. The Streets department picks up trash & recycling at the curb, and at every major event and happening in the City. We recycle tires, yard waste, electronics and other items at our Sanitation Convenience Centers, and oversee a network of over 7000 miles of streets that require, paving, lighting, and monitoring. Hardly a 9 to 5, we explore creative ways of processing solid waste and creating a healthier, safer City through our work.
Conversations are offered year round, by faculty or administrative request.

    Recycling Assessments

School administration can request a comprehensive solid waste & recycling assessment by SWEEP (Streets and Walkways Education and Enforcement Program) Officers, for areas in and around the school. SWEEP Officers will review waste management practices in classrooms, food preparation & service areas, corridors, office spaces, and exterior play, storage, and disposal areas, to provide insightful ways to create a more sustainable school.

These assessments can be done year round, by administrative request.

The Green Schools Initiative is a core part of Mayor Parker’s vision for high-quality education for Philadelphia students of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. It promotes environmental sustainability and aligns with the city’s commitment to a safer and cleaner environment.

    Why Apply?

    Exposure for your school

The Green Schools Program provides an opportunity for schools to gain exposure and recognition for their efforts in creating a sustainable future. Our program provides a platform for schools to showcase their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This exposure can help to attract new students and faculty, as well as provide a platform for the school to share their successes.

CONTENT FOR SCHOOLS TO USE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

The Green Schools Program provides content and resources for schools to use throughout the year. Our program provides educational materials, activities, and resources that can be used to engage students and faculty in the conversation about sustainability. We also provide mentorship and financial support to help schools implement their sustainability initiatives.

Financial Support for the 2023-2024 School Year
